How does it work?

click USB adapter is based on the FT2232H, a dual high-speed USB to a multipurpose UART/FIFO IC from FTDI Chip. The entire USB protocol is handled on the chip, with no USB-specific firmware programming requirements, but requires USB device drivers for operation available free from the official FTDI page. It can work at high speed (480Mbps) and full speed (12Mbps), depending on the usage, alongside a dual Multi-Protocol Synchronous Serial Engine (MPSSE) used to simplify synchronous serial protocol between USB and available interfaces.

The FT2232H provides the necessary communication lines defined by the mikroBUS™ standard. The mikroBUS™ host connector consists of two 1x8 female headers with SPI (MOSI, MISO, SCK, CS), I2C (SDA, SCL), UART (Tx, Rx), RST, PWM, Analog and Interrupt lines as well as 3.3V, 5V, and GND power lines. This connector allows connection of all of the Click boards™ from the MikroE lineup. The J1 jumper selects whether UART or I2C interface will be used. For visual presentation, this board features a TX/RX LED that will indicate the data transfer. The FT2232H at disposal has a CAT93C46, a 1Kbit microwire serial EEPROM from Catalyst Semiconductor. The operational configuration mode and USB Description strings of the FT2232H are configurable in external EEPROM over the USB interface.

In addition, the click USB adapter features an MCP3204, a 4-channel 12-bit AD converter with SPI serial interface from Microchip. This ADC communicates to the FT2232H over the SPI serial interface and adds analog readings of the Click boards™ to the FT2232H, thus to the host computer. There is also a J2 onboard jumper used for selecting whether the AN pin on the mikroBUS™ socket will be just another GPIO pin or connected to the MCP3204 AD converter circuit, thus serving for analog readings.

click USB adapter board can be powered through a USB cable only. Onboard power circuitry generates 3.3V and 5V, necessary for different Click board™ types.
